Monergism (the work of one) is the doctrine that teaches our new birth/regeneration is solely a work of the Holy Spirit as opposed to the notion that we, as fallen humans, initiate the process by our belief or work with the Spirit towards our regeneration (synergism). In passages like Ephesians 2:1-10, we learn that as unbelievers we are dead in sin, yet physically alive and walking in the course of the world (contextually:sin), following the prince of the power of the air (the same spirit working in the sons of all who is lost), living in the passions of our flesh (seeking to do whatever felt good no matter how wicked) to satisfy the desires of our body and our minds, and by nature (meaning that this all came to us naturally as a result of the fall) we were children of wrath. Because of that very nature, it is impossible for anyone born into it to make a righteous decision to repent and turn to Christ...because it violates what we know as natural. So the solution to being saved out of that disposition in which we were born is to be born again (Jesus’s words, not mine). And just like we did not initiate our natural birth, the same is true for our spiritual birth.

As it is written:

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:4-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Monergism is a just reason to proclaim Soli Deo Gloria (To God Alone be the Glory)!!!
